Virtues are formed by prayer. Prayer preserves temperance. Prayer suppresses anger. Prayer prevents emotions of pride and envy. Prayer draws into the soul the Holy Spirit, and raises man to Heaven.  - Mor Ephrem

GET STARTED> To help you progress into your prayer life, an abbreviated prayer book published by the late Metropolitan Mor Athanasius Yeshue Samuel of blessed memory is presented above. The translation directly from Syriac is by Archdeacon Murad Saliba Barsom. It has short prayers for every day of the week. Minor revisions to bring the English in line with modern usage has been introduced by the moderator.

Isn't it great to know the Church has a variety of prayers!

> Prayer is spiritual food.

A Christian's character, grace, and well being can often be  tied directly to the quality of his/her prayer lifestyle. It's a radical concept - can one really experience more peace and more victory on one's knees, foregoing fists or wars or courts?

You bet'cha - but learning to really pray (commune with God) is a process. It's not like instant coffee. It's not remote control. It takes exercise. It takes guts.

Our Church prescribes certain prayers at certain times of the day.

A common version of these prayers in English can be found > here

Many prayers, however, have not yet been translated.  In other words, there is much for us to say beyond what we repeat daily in common. The Church prescribes certain prayers to ensure we reasonably worship and petition the Almighty throughout the day. These are words used by our Lord Himself, his prophets and apostles, and the spiritually vibrant early church fathers.

Recitation of these texts without change communicates the nutshell of our faith presently and through time, preserving and protecting the truth revealed to us. What we share is not meant to overwhelm or suffocate the personal desire to hear from God, but to supplement that need. The Scriptures ask us to "pray without ceasing." Fifteen to 20 minutes a night (the way many of us pray), doesn't seem that long in this context. Pray the prayers of the Church as our fathers did, and thoughtfully exercise your own expression in light of experience and the Scriptures. After all, that's how our fathers did it! Talk to walk with God!
